A new mural in downtown Washington DC will be the first of its kind in the United States and it’s about to get a lot more colourful.
Key points:The DC mural is being painted in collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)The artwork will be part of the National Portrait Gallery of Art in Washington, DCA total of 40 murals in DC will receive a national mural titleThe mural is part of a multi-faceted series that began with the first national murals unveiled in 2012.
The new mural, entitled The Journey of a Girl, will be painted on a brick wall near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Maryland Street NW in the heart of DC.
It is part a nationwide effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Douglass and will also feature a mural by renowned muralist Charles M. Wright, who also designed the National Gallery of Fine Arts.
The mural, by award-winning artist David Ehrlich, will include works from the American Society of Painters and Painters of Color (ASPC) and the National Art Center of the United Nations.
“The Journey of A Girl is a moment that will last for generations to come,” Ms Ehrleith said.
“It’s an amazing opportunity to paint a message of healing and inclusion that’s going to have a huge impact on the communities in DC.”
The mural will include a mural from ASPC’s American Woman of Color series, which features the first-ever women of color painted in the nation’s capital.
“This will be a really important work for DC, because there are a lot of people who aren’t aware of the women of colour that have come before us,” Ms Wright said.
She said the message of inclusion in DC was a “big part of my inspiration”.
“When you see people who are really interested in art, it’s a way to see your friends and neighbours and to feel connected to the world,” she said.
Ms Ehrlich’s work was also inspired by the life of his late mother, who died of cancer at the age of 85.
“She had a profound impact on my life,” he said.”[My mother] was a pioneer, and she wanted to do something positive and beautiful for people.
I’m very proud of the work she did and I want to be able to share it with my community.”
The National Portraits Gallery of American Art in the Washington, D.C. building, which houses the National Collection of American Paintings, was asked by the American Painters Association to paint the mural.
The work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The National Museum has partnered with the NMAAHC to provide funding for the project.
“When I see the work that has been done by the National Archives and Museums Service, I am deeply grateful and excited about the opportunities that we have to connect with each other and to connect to the American people and all the people that we all love so much,” said Dr Robert Baskin, president of the American Museum of Natural History.
“I am so proud of what the museum has done and I am excited about working with our partners to create something beautiful for all of us.”
The work will be in full colour on the National Mall, and it will be featured on a series of murals at the American National Museum and Museum of the Fine Arts in Washington.
The museum is in the process of building a new permanent permanent home for the National Collections.
